We Should all Agree to Disagree Politely If We Can

Differences of opinion are a normal part of life. Everyday people disagree over something. Sooner or later you find some people losing control over the tiniest of issues and then someone else has to step in and cool things down. But sociologists say that differences of opinion lead to the creation of new special interest groups. Maybe that is why we had so many tribes throughout history. People just got tired of getting along.

I realize that may be an oversimplification of the matter but tribal politics has always been an interesting subject to me. With a huge world to populate why did ancient tribes spend so much time fighting wars? I guess part of it is that they ran out of places to move away to.

The most famous tribal migration in Roman history was when the Cimbri and Teutons moved into Italy from Denmark. Why did they travel so far? I guess they couldn’t find any place else to live.

It must have been the thing to do in the ancient world for a few thousand years. Just gather everyone up and wander off down the road. But there came a day when there were no other good lands to settle. And then people began fighting over the lands that had already been claimed.

Once you look at all the facts of a matter, you can usually figure out who is right or wrong. With that in mind we should never really assume that everything is settled.  Someone may come along later and decide that there is something new to say in the matter.

Always be prepared to change your mind when new information comes along.  You can certainly be gracious about differences of opinion but unfortunately too many people today act inappropriately when they have been shown to be in the wrong.
